At the beginning of March, Federal Minister for Building Barbara Hendricks announced the 24 selected "National Urban Development Projects 2017", which will receive a total of around 65 million euros in funding.

Municipalities from all over Germany applied with 90 individual projects.

Among the projects receiving funding are the plans to tunnel under the English Garden in Munich, which will reverse the existing fragmentation of the central green space by the Mittlerer Ring and restore the cohesion of the historic park. In the priority area of urban development cooperation, the "Sprung über die Emscher" project in the Ruhr region was selected, among others. There, a foot and cycle bridge will be built over the Emscher/Rhine/Herne canal water junction, complete with landscaping. The bridge links individual projects in the Emscher region.
