Why build new when you can also convert? More than 70 percent of all building investments in Germany are made in existing buildings.

In addition to economic and ecological aspects, conversion and further building also harbours potential for innovations in building culture. Strategies are needed on how historically developed built structures - including those from the post-war period - can continue to be used.

For this reason, the Federal Foundation for Building Culture and StadtBauKultur NRW, supported by numerous partners, including the bdla, invite you to the building culture workshop "Umbaukultur" in Bochum. The workshop day will offer impulse contributions on concrete projects and open discussion rounds on the possibilities and requirements of conversion.

In keeping with the theme, the Baukulturwerkstatt will take place at places where conversion culture is lived: The Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr in Bochum, which opened in 2016, combines the former Marienkirche with newly created concert halls for the Bochum Symphony Orchestra. On the eve, both cooperation partners invite to a reception in the Rotunda.

This summer the old Katholikentagsbahnhof will be reopened as a venue and cultural institution. Those who would like to discover new sides of Bochum are cordially invited to a city walk.

The Baukultur workshops are the central event format of the Bundesstiftung Baukultur. Their results are incorporated into the Baukultur Report, which as a status report primarily formulates recommendations for action for political decision-makers. The Baukulturbericht 2018/19 is dedicated to the topic "Heritage.Stock.Future".
