Since the beginning of June 2020, new rules for the protection of nature and landscape and for the compensation of interventions apply.

The Federal Compensation Ordinance (Bundeskompensationsverordnung, BKompV) creates uniform nationwide standards for the statutory nature conservation impact regulation. This concerns central public infrastructure projects.

The Ordinance applies to public infrastructure projects that fall within the remit of federal authorities, such as the construction of certain overhead power lines or underground cables, the construction of offshore wind farms, railway and waterway facilities, certain federal trunk roads (from 2021) and national defence projects.
