On behalf of the Federal Chamber of Architects and the Federal Chamber of Engineers, a second online survey on the effects of the Corona pandemic in planning offices was conducted in June 2020. The evaluation for the entirety of architects shows that the crisis is currently hitting the profession less hard than feared in April. The state support measures are stabilising the offices. Nevertheless, there is no reason for architects of all disciplines to sound the all-clear, as 49 percent of the planners surveyed expect a decline in orders over the next 12 months.

Positive development since April

Compared to the first online survey by BAK and BIngK in April, the assessment and situation of planning offices has improved. In June, 62 percent of the respondents reported noticeable negative effects of the pandemic, in April the rate was still at 81 percent. These are not only economic effects but also, for example, delayed approval processes and delays on construction sites. Negative economic consequences for their own offices were noted by 43 percent of respondents in June, compared to 58 percent in April. The number of those complaining about acute liquidity problems fell to 6 percent after 18 percent in April.

Situation in Landscape Architecture Comparatively Better

As in April, the situation among freelance landscape architects is slightly better than the average for all architects. In a comparison of the four disciplines, for example, the rate of newly concluded contracts is highest in landscape architecture. The proportion of those who are already experiencing negative economic consequences is fortunately lowest among landscape architects; a remarkable 64 percent stated that they had not noticed any such effects. In contrast, the crisis is hitting interior architects disproportionately hard, which is already evident from the fact that 12 percent fear they will have to give up their self-employment (3 percent among landscape architects, 5 percent among all architects).
