From 2018 to 2020 , an international working group of IFLA World, under the leadership of Prof. Fritz Auweck, has developed an amendment to an international definition of the profession in close coordination with the International Labor Organization (ILO) , which is now also available in German translation. Based on the principles of ISCO (International Standard Classification of Occupations), IFLA has formulated a definition of the profession of landscape architect. However, there are certain differences between the ISCO definition and the professional tasks of German landscape architects.

In Germany, the definition of the profession is regulated in the individual architectural laws of the federal states. The new international definition was adopted by the IFLA World Council in 2020 and applies worldwide.
