On 1 January 2027, Dr Anne Schmedding, an art and architectural historian, will take over as Chair of the Board of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture. She succeeds the architect and urban planner Reiner Nagel, who has led the Foundation since May 2013.
At its meeting on 25 August 2026, the Foundation Board of the Federal Foundation appointed Dr Anne Schmedding as the new Chair of the Executive Board. With Anne Schmedding, an experienced expert who is thoroughly familiar with the structures of the Federal Foundation is taking over the leadership of the Foundation. She had previously helped shape the institution’s work as Deputy Chair of the Executive Board from 2017 to 2019. Prior to that, her roles included working at the Federal Foundation for Building Culture, where she was responsible for the Building Culture Report, and teaching architectural theory and history at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Most recently, she contributed her expertise as a representative of the Executive Board of the Berliner Leben Foundation.
Sören Bartol, Chair of the Foundation Council and Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Construction, praised Dr Schmedding as a “qualified and highly motivated leader”, “who brings fresh impetus to the discourse on building culture and sets new standards of quality in urban development, planning, construction and the housing sector within the Foundation”. He thanked Reiner Nagel, who has “given the Foundation a distinct profile and a voice that is heard in politics, professional circles and the public sphere”.
