A career on the green-and-blue path. Construction meeting and reception on 16 September 2026
From 15 to 18 September 2026, Nuremberg will once again host GaLaBau, the international trade fair for urban greenery and open spaces. The overarching theme is ‘Climate-ready for the future’. The approximately 1,100 exhibitors are committed to this theme, which forms the guiding principle of the extensive supporting programme and provides the impetus for the innovative new formats that will be on display and open to visitors at this 26th edition of the fair. Key future issues for the green sector, such as climate adaptation, recruiting skilled workers and promoting young talent, and technological innovations, will take centre stage at this four-day industry gathering.
The profession is exhibiting
in Hall 3A. For the fifth year running, the bdla is showcasing the profession of landscape architects and their services at its stand in Hall 3A. “The order of the day: green, blue and colourful infrastructures,” says Prof. Stephan Lenzen, bdla President, describing the profession’s future challenges. “Blue stands for water management in times of increasing heat and drought; green for vegetation, biodiversity and ecological functions. ‘Colourful’ complements this perspective by adding the social dimension of diversity – the protection of valuable ecosystems as well as the diversity of the people who use these open spaces. This also includes the design of gender-equitable, inclusive and accessible spaces that enable all social groups to participate on an equal footing.”
shown, regulated, healthy, learnt
The bdla’s exhibition stand is, in a sense, the embodiment of this principle, showcasing the practical and planned implementation of these statements. The association is organising so-called ‘theme days’ at its stand, starting on Tuesday 15 September with ‘Displayed – naturally female. Female: of Course. Women in Landscape Architecture’. The focus is on six women from Thuringia: their work, their approach, their inspiration. These multi-faceted portraits highlight just how varied the paths in landscape architecture can be – and how enriching female perspectives are for the design of our environment. The exhibition of the same name, along with an accompanying brochure, will be on display and available throughout the duration of the fair.
The premiere of women@GaLaBau will take place at GaLaBau on 16 September. ‘Strong Women, Networked Power’ aims to give a voice to women in the horticulture and landscaping sector.
As usual, the ‘fabulous world of regulations’ will be the focus of the association’s second day at the fair. Tom Kirsten, bdla spokesperson for construction technology and standardisation, will guide participants ‘by the book’ through the now traditional bdla construction meeting. At this half-day event, organised in cooperation with the Federal Association for Gardening, Landscaping and Sports Ground Construction (BGL), Godelmann and NürnbergMesse, the focus at NCC Ost will be on playground safety and the greening of urban insurance-related vacant lots. Further topics include the challenges of façade connections and the promotion of biodiversity in built-up areas. Wednesday will draw to a close with a reception, to which the bdla and NürnbergMesse invite guests at the bdla stand in Hall 3A.
The theme of ‘health’ through landscape architecture continues on Day 3. Health protection, health promotion and environmental protection can be implemented in an integrated manner and generate synergistic effects. In particular, the design of urban green spaces can contribute to health protection and health promotion in a variety of ways. Shaping the landscape therefore means taking responsibility for health, ecological stability and social inclusion, and contributing to resilient and sustainable urban development. – Against the backdrop of climate change, the bdla presents contributions from landscape architects for healthy living environments.
All the tasks mentioned above demonstrate the great need for landscape architects. Without landscape architecture, there can be no climate-resilient, liveable cities, and the beauty and character of our landscapes will be lost. At least twice the current number of graduates are needed in practices, government departments and local authorities, says Marion Linke, bdla spokesperson for training, estimating the demand. Choosing to study landscape architecture means opting for one of the most versatile and effective design professions of our time and becoming a problem-solver. Further information will be available on Friday, 18 September.
