In 2018, the bdla carried out a fundamental revision of the model contract for outdoor landscape design and has updated it several times since then. In the bdla’s experience, the contract has achieved a measurable level of acceptance amongst the relevant professional circles nationwide and is now also used in some cases by public sector clients.

The provisions in this model contract address typical practical issues in landscape architecture; for example, when it comes to describing the services to be provided, specific aspects of project management and, last but not least, the structuring of fees in a way that is fair to all parties’ interests. In the webinar, we will address the problem cases that lie, so to speak, ‘behind’ the contract clauses, in order to make it clearer why the provisions in the model contract are worded as they are. For a wide range of provisions, we will therefore explain the legal difficulties that can arise if there is no provision in the architect’s contract for the relevant scenario, and how the bdla model contract addresses this scenario and helps to ensure that problems do not arise in the first place wherever possible.

The aim of the webinar is for participants to develop their own in-depth understanding of the contract so that, on the one hand, they can provide sound justification during contract negotiations as to why a particular provision makes sense; on the other hand, this in-depth understanding should help them to better know, in special circumstances, how to adapt the contract appropriately at key decision points by ticking boxes, filling in details, making changes or even shortening the text. To this end, the ‘Supplementary Modular System’ accompanying the model contract will also be examined in more detail.

The webinar will take place online on 10 December 2026 from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm. An application for
recognition as a continuing professional development course has been submitted to the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Architects.
