On the day before the Plant Planners’ discussions on 11 June 2026, the Working Group on Plant Use held its annual face-to-face meeting, which took place in Hamburg this year. The meeting began with a discussion of current developments and issues within the regional groups and offices.

At the general meeting of the bdla Hamburg, topics such as the monetary value of green spaces, the removal of impervious surfaces – including the associated maintenance costs – and green facades were put forward as suggestions for topics of particular professional relevance. In its forthcoming meetings, the working group will discuss which issues should be explored in greater depth in future and taken up as key areas of focus.

In addition, the working group addressed the further development of the bdla position paper on the use of plants in urban green spaces with regard to allergens. The draft, which had been drawn up by the working group members over the past few weeks, was presented as a working version by bdla technical spokesperson Claudia Blaurock during the event the following day and discussed with the participants. The paper advocates against the use of blanket exclusion lists and instead calls for the scientifically sound, site-appropriate use of plants, recognising biodiversity as a key component of climate-resilient and health-promoting cities. Additional comments are now being incorporated into the final version. Publication is planned for the near future.

In addition, the working group turned its attention to the Planting Planners’ Discussions for the coming years. Initial topics and excursions have already been finalised for the event on 11 and 12 June 2027 in Essen, to be held in the context of the International Garden Exhibition in the Ruhr region.
