This is the 15th competition since it was first held in 1993. The prize, which is awarded every two years, honours exemplary projects and their authors. The subject matter is socially and ecologically oriented settlement and landscape development as well as contemporary open space planning. The more intensive use of urban and rural areas is placing ever greater demands on the efficiency of the environment. Urban growth and the simultaneous transformation of rural regions, climate change and the energy transition, economic challenges and - currently - the consequences of the pandemic are generating pressure to adapt and conflicts. Great efforts are currently being made to adapt existing infrastructures to the changed conditions, and entire systems are being rebuilt. The development and implementation of these new systems requires a fundamental rethink at all planning levels.

On April 23, 2021, the nine-member jury will sift through the 35 nominated works and decide on the awarding of the First Prize and the awards in the categories Public Space as a Center, Living Environment / Working Environment, Use of Plants, Landscape and Environmental Planning / Landscape Experience, Sport, Play, Movement, Landscape Architecture in Detail, Young Landscape Architecture, Climate Adaptation, and Historic Facilities / Garden Monument Preservation. The award honours outstanding planning achievements, including conceptual ones, which demonstrate aesthetically sophisticated, innovative, ecological and participatory solutions for the above-mentioned tasks.

The award will be presented on Friday, 8 October 2021, in Berlin. On this occasion, a comprehensive documentation with all awarded and nominated works of the current competition year will be produced.
