On 23 October 2025, the Working Group on Landscape Planning held its 106th meeting at the premises of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in Leipzig.
As part of a technical discussion open to members, working group members and guests discussed the use of artificial intelligence in landscape planning practice – a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant and raises key questions regarding methodology, responsibility and the role of the profession.
Short presentations outlined potential applications in GIS, highlighted the potential of in-house chatbots for planning practices, and shared experiences and expectations regarding the day-to-day use of AI. The subsequent discussion addressed aspects of quality assurance, automation, argumentation in contract negotiations, and the use of AI in university teaching.
The following day saw the 2025 Update Conference, organised by the bdla in collaboration with the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, take place under the title ‘Daring to do more for the landscape – landscape development in times of accelerated planning and multiple crises’. The working group contributed to the expert panel on ‘Compensation’, the draft legislation for the RED III Directive, and the still-pending amendment to the HOAI.
A key outcome of the conference is the first draft of a position paper that takes up the conference theme and formulates concise proposals as a joint commitment by the working group. The results of the conference are yet to be incorporated. Once finalised, it is planned to publish the paper via the bdla’s communication channels.
