Soil versus substrate!? - Site conditions and criteria for planning and establishing sustainable plantings.

If the soil is broken, will a substrate fix it?

Soil is the site factor that gardeners have been working on since time immemorial. A lot of knowledge and experience was needed to adapt the soil by horticultural means so that the desired plants would grow. This experience was guarded and substrate recipes were only passed on to insiders.

For some decades now, more and more powerful machines have been available for soil cultivation, and the industry offers a wide range of soil additives and improvers as well as a variety of substrates for almost every purpose. So with the right product and technical help, the landscape architect can create any site - or so it seems.

At the same time, this expectation is formulated by the customer. We are supposed to fix it if the soil has been spoiled by construction and the site is actually not a suitable location at all, or if previous generations have left their dirt behind. In order to avoid the latter, the legislator has laid down requirements in the form of the Federal Soil Protection Act. New standards are intended to help protect the soil during the construction process.

The seminar takes up current developments in standardisation and provides handouts on this. Practical knowledge about soils and the identification of soil types is not only required on the construction site. Therefore, soil identification will be carried out in the practical part of the seminar by means of numerous parameters, the recognition of indicator plants and by means of quick tests.

Current developments on the market of substrates and soil additives will be highlighted. In special locations, such as on roofs, in street spaces and difficult inner-city situations, they may well be justified. But one might think that trees only have a chance of survival with substrates. Do these keep their promise? Has the on-site soil had its day?

The seminar is aimed at landscape architects, landscape gardeners, engineers and representatives of cities and municipalities. Discussions and professional exchange will be given ample space in the seminar and in the supporting programme.
