The Schweizerwiese forms the backdrop for the young talent competition, which the Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten bdla - Landesverband Baden-Württemberg, together with the Verband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau Baden-Württemberg and the Gartenschau Bad Herrenalb 2017 has announced.

Under the motto "Black Forest moves! - Green Ideas for Bodies, Minds and Cultures", young landscape architects, students and graduates of this course were called upon to contribute their ideas for a temporary show garden for the duration of the garden show. In keeping with the motto "Schwarzwald bewegt!", the garden should reflect Bad Herrenalb's location in the northern Black Forest as well as the elements of movement and activity that characterize the spa town. The garden should be actively usable for visitors, appealing to the mind, body and cultural interest.

From the competition, the design by M. A. Laurence Didier from Trier with the title "The Black Forest tells! - The Old Wise Men" emerged as the winner:

The "Old WiseMen"
For centuries, trees have shaped the natural spaces of the Black Forest, which have a strong identity. Nobody knows it better and longer. This knowledge and their experience of life makes the trees the 'Old Wise Men', who have come together here to bring the 'figures' of the Black Forest and their messages closer to visitors. The trees - turned upside down - become living and dynamic figures. The viewer should consciously take a different perspective, interpret them and appreciate their enormous knowledge again. The topography around Bad Herrenalb is reflected in the spatial design: surrounded by raised borders and a slightly transparent fringe of grasses, a central valley space is created in the garden. Yellow is the symbolic colour for knowledge and growth.

The 150 square metre show garden is located near the biotope and the event stage and was created together with trainees from the VGL BW under the direction of Werner Westenfelder GmbH Garten- und Landschaftsbau with the kind support of Bruns Pflanzen-Export GmbH.
