On July 3 and 4, 2025, the BdB invites you to the transformation congress "Roots and Visions: Urban greenery of the future". The congress will take place in one of the lighthouse projects for urban greenery in Germany: The Green Bunker St. Pauli.

Climate change poses major challenges for our cities worldwide. Higher temperatures, increasing heavy rainfall events and changing precipitation patterns require innovative approaches to climate adaptation. Green infrastructure, which includes parks, street trees and green facades as well as urban forests, roof gardens and water features, plays a key role in this.

The two-day congress "Roots and Visions: Future Urban Greenery" highlights the importance of urban greenery for climate adaptation and shows ways in which municipalities can make their green strategies fit for the future. It also draws attention to the central role of tree nurseries and their products, especially woody plants, which are essential for the development of a climate-adapted green infrastructure for cities.
The green infrastructure itself requires fundamental prerequisites in order to be able to sustainably fulfill its climate-relevant and ecosystem services - keywords here are transpiration cooling, rainwater retention and habitats for greater biodiversity in cities.

The aim of the symposium is to address horticultural, planning and socio-cultural aspects of the necessary urban transformation. Against this background, the conference will show ways in which the transformation of municipalities into a living space for people and nature in line with climate change can succeed. International best practices and benchmarks of green transformation will be presented, and a large number of speakers and experts will have their say in keynotes and discussions. The thematic spectrum ranges from integrated urban horticulture to the necessary restructuring of urban water management: from roots to visions!
