The founding meeting at which the articles of association of the bdla Landesverband Hamburg e.V. were adopted is recorded as having taken place in 1986 – reason enough to celebrate this anniversary in style 40 years on!
To mark the occasion, the Executive Board has invited all members, as well as guests and friends of the bdla, to an anniversary celebration on 11 June 2026 aboard the LIEGER in the Oevelgönne Museum Harbour – a venue steeped in tradition, which is exposed to the wind and weather yet securely moored, has a broad perspective, is transparent and has a rich atmosphere – qualities that have sustained and characterised the regional association and its many volunteers for over 40 years now.
The current chairman, Johannes Hügle, together with his deputy, Katharina Feiler, and the treasurer, Rudolf Hennemann, welcomed the approximately 75 guests. Together, the executive committee, aided by a journey through time in the form of numerous archive photographs, guided the guests through the past and extended a special welcome to the former executive committee members present. Lothar Steffen received a special honour, as the former chairman (2000–2006) celebrated his 75th birthday on 6 June. There was further special applause for the current treasurer, Rudolf Hennemann, who has been serving the regional association for 23 years (!), initially as a committee member and, since 2006, as treasurer. Now in his eighth term of office, he has steered the organisation through years that have been at times calm and at times turbulent, and is currently playing a leading role in amending the membership fee regulations to secure the funding of the bdla Northern Office, which has been jointly run with the neighbouring associations of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since March 2025.

This was followed by a specialist presentation by Axel Heineck as part of the bdla’s annual theme, ‘Climate Adaptation and Health’. After five years of voluntary project coordination and stakeholder management for Citizens Forests e.V. in the Hamburg area, Axel Heineck is now in the start-up phase of setting up his own business specialising in biodiversity management. In his richly illustrated talk, he demonstrated how Citizens Forests brings together funding, land, people and expertise to plant biodiverse and climate-effective patches of woodland – ‘Tiny Forests’ – even in small spaces. Questions from the audience demonstrated their keen interest in the topic.
Afterwards, Osmar’s sumptuous Cuban buffet and the bar, manned by barman Lutz, were opened, allowing the evening to unfold in a convivial atmosphere with a superb view over the Elbe and engaging conversations, lasting well into the late hours.
Special thanks go to the bdla Federal Association for providing funding from the Public Relations Fund, and to our sponsors who generously supported the anniversary event:
