The bdla Hamburg Regional Association is launching a new initiative: the Sustainability Salon. This series of talks will take place at various venues and explore different aspects of sustainability. Please scroll right to the bottom of the page to register.
The times call for change – and they demand it too. This is not merely a prevailing perception, but a reason for all those interested to exchange views on the broad subject of sustainable planning and development in landscape architecture. To this end, we wish to establish the ‘bdla Sustainability Salon’ as a new format. In a relaxed atmosphere, selected panellists will discuss a chosen topic whilst engaging with the audience. The focus is less on objectives and outcomes and more on collective reflection and allowing each individual’s perspectives to mature.
Day-to-day business and office life often leave too little room for discussing one’s own work and reflecting on personal thoughts. In the safe space of the bdla Sustainability Salon, questions can be asked to which no one yet knows the answer; we can explore our own positions on sustainability issues and discuss how we can successfully move from thought to action. How are sustainable values put into practice in everyday office life and become second nature? How do we talk to our clients about needs, requirements and comfort in our projects? How do we manage to integrate sustainable development as a ‘background noise’ into our work and planning processes as a matter of course? Is this adequately recognised? And how can we convincingly demonstrate the social relevance of our actions?
Topics outside the mainstream should also be explored: nature and environmental ethics; beauty and atmosphere as key factors in sustainability; the importance of craftsmanship and horticultural traditions; and the promotion of plant use in the spirit of a ‘Planthropoocene’.
Stories from the future and compelling, hands-on practices can be the key to a small-scale shift in direction that inspires something greater. Anyone keen to become part of this quest and to help shape a sustainable value system within landscape architecture is warmly invited to the launch event entitled ‘Paths to Sustainability’ on 13 April 2026 at 6 pm at the Bruun Möllers office, Ernst-Merck-Straße 12–14, 20099 Hamburg. The event is expected to last approximately two hours.
We are delighted to welcome Irmhild Brüggen as our first guest. An environmental scientist and Sustainability Officer at Leuphana University Lüneburg, she will introduce the topic drawing on her many years of professional experience.
The evening will be moderated by Carmen Kurbjuhn of KompetenzKontor Berlin.
