Hauke Krüger and Jeanine Ziarek were honoured at an event organised by the bdla’s Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional association at Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences for producing the best final-year projects in their respective year groups.
Every year, the regional association awards a prize for the best final-year project – at Bachelor’s or Master’s level – in the field of landscape architecture at Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences. On behalf of the jury, the regional chair, Carola Morgenstern, and the treasurer, Enno Meier-Schomburg, presented the awards to the two former students, who now work in landscape architecture practices in Hamburg and Rostock.
As in previous years, the jury was delighted with the number of theses submitted for the award and their overall high standard. The jury would like to thank all the applicants.
For the year 2023, the award was presented to Hauke Krüger for his Bachelor’s thesis. His project was entitled ‘Urban design for the town of Radebeul – The development of Meißner Straße as a new town centre’. The thesis was supervised by Professor Dr Carolin Rolka and the freelance landscape architect Hannes Hamann from Rostock. Hauke Krüger’s thesis was based on the brief for the Meißner Straße competition in Radebeul, in which he specified the objectives within areas of specialisation of his own choosing and presented these both graphically and in text.
The 2024 award for the best Master’s thesis was presented to Jeanine Ziarek. She had written her thesis on the question: “A new aesthetic in the preservation of historic gardens? The sustainability of listed gardens in urban spaces”. The thesis was supervised by Professor Dr Caroline Rolka and the landscape architect Philipp Rösner. Jeanine Ziarek begins by examining examples in Hamburg, Neubrandenburg, Düsseldorf and Neuzelle. Drawing on these very diverse projects involving partial reinterpretation and redesign, she analyses approaches to ensuring the sustainability of heritage sites and applies them in her design for the Bürgerpark in Spremberg. Jeanine Ziarek also reports on her work in the current issue (4/2025) of the bdla association’s journal “landschaftsarchitekt:innen”.
