The construction sector is responsible for around 40% of total CO2 emissions worldwide. This means that this sector can and must make its contribution to the political reduction targets. This is no easy task: from the ageing infrastructure and housing shortage to the calls from trade and industry for space and building reserves, new buildings and extensions are seen as the basis for economic development in the coming decades in many areas. On paper, there is already a colorful array of plans, strategies and concepts on how to tackle the high consumption of raw materials and land as well as CO2 emissions despite the planned construction activity. In this respect, the green industry is perhaps not as green as it likes to think of itself and needs to come up with new concepts. What is the state of materials research? Which materials will bring us closer to the goal of climate neutrality? At what levels can the "cradle-to-cradle" principle be implemented and by when? Will mandatory standards be introduced in time or will the industry have to commit itself? Despite the rapidly changing framework conditions, is there still room for the creativity of designers in order to meet the high demands on the open spaces of the future?

In the first two blocks, the symposium will range from a general description of the raw materials situation in Germany and the construction industry's CO2 reduction targets to the development of sustainable materials for open spaces and specific approaches to various certification systems. In the third block, approaches from planning practice round off the program and provide guidance for everyday use.
