The bdla regional associations of Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Bremen, and Schleswig-Holstein have been jointly organising a ‘Nordlichter’ gathering for several years now. This year, the bdla Schleswig-Holstein is inviting the northern associations to an early summer gathering in Husum on 8 May.
During a joint bus tour, the Schleswig-Holstein Regional Association and its guests will stop off at various local authorities, meet with service users, planners and residents – and heated discussions are expected on the topic of the energy transition, including its implications for the climate and its impact on health.
In this context, North Frisia – due to its exposed coastal location – is one of the regions particularly hard hit by the consequences of climate change, placing high demands on local planning.
Under the nationwide Climate Adaptation Act, a binding framework is being established for local authorities to systematically assess climate risks and develop strategies. Successful examples from coastal regions in northern Germany show that broad-based participatory processes – involving, for instance, agriculture, water management and coastal protection – are crucial for sustainable measures. Health aspects are also coming more into focus: heat, changing allergy seasons and extreme weather events are affecting quality of life.
At the same time, the expansion of renewable energy is exacerbating planning conflicts: wind power and photovoltaics require land that is also important for agriculture, nature conservation and tourism. North Frisia in particular is regarded as a pioneering region in the field of renewable energy, but the energy generated here must also be transported.
As always, the day will draw to a cosy close with a convivial dinner together in Husum.
