Working Group on Vocational Training: Focus on Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, University Day and new competence targets

The Working Group on Vocational Training met with university lecturers and students at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences on 27 and 28 March 2026. A key focus was the presentation of teaching and study programmes in Osnabrück.

During the event, students presented two selected projects from different modules and provided an insight into their practical studies. Particular emphasis was placed on the project-based approach, which encompasses complex planning tasks – such as dealing with the risks posed by heavy rainfall – as well as in-depth project planning involving detailed design and construction plans.

The close integration of theory and practice, as well as the accessibility of the teaching staff, were rated positively by the students. At the same time, areas for further development were identified, in particular a greater integration of agricultural issues. The university explained the programme’s concept as a broad-based, planning-methodological approach within the Bachelor’s degree, complemented by a wide range of compulsory-elective modules and specialisation options. Interdisciplinary formats, such as the cross-faculty campus conference, promote exchange across disciplinary boundaries.

In addition, the simplified recognition of German landscape architecture degree programmes by IFLA Europe was discussed. Active dialogue is to be sought with the Vice-President of IFLA Europe, Madara Markova, on this matter. Information was also provided by the ASAP Landscape Architecture Technical Committee, which is currently pressing ahead with the revision of the subject criteria and manuals. The aim is to embed current and overarching topics, such as artificial intelligence, more firmly in the qualification profile for the training of landscape architects in future.

At the autumn meeting in 2026, the University Day on Landscape Architecture, AI, digitalisation in research and teaching, and dual degree programmes relating to the public sector are to be discussed.
