At its meeting on 24 November 2025, the Working Group on Plant Use set out key directions for future activities – both in terms of content and organisation. The focus was on the further development of the discussions with plant planners and a new policy initiative.
The 2026 talks in Hamburg will once again cover a wide range of current topics, including: maintenance from an administrative perspective, tree and soil protection on building sites, the use of various mulching materials, and aspects of insect diversity on native and non-native plant species. In addition, four excursions are planned to provide a larger number of participants with practical insights. Amongst other things, tours to the Grüner Bunker in St. Pauli and through Planten un Blomen Park are planned.
Plans are in place to link the event to the International Garden Exhibition in the Ruhr region in 2027. The opening event is to take place at the Haus der Technik in Essen, whilst the second day of the event will be devoted entirely to excursions to the IGA gardens – following the successful format used at BUGA 2023 in Mannheim. Weihenstephan has been suggested as a possible venue for 2028, in view of the 80th anniversary of the trial garden. A link with the BUGA in the Middle Rhine Valley is under discussion for 2029.
Strategically, the working group aims to strengthen its position in policy-making. A proposed position paper on the topic of health and the use of plants is intended to highlight the contribution that diverse, high-quality plantings make to the quality of urban life. The paper is being drafted by an open working group and is to be finalised at the next meeting
