Awards ceremony on 12 September 2025 in Berlin. Awards in nine categories

On 12 September 2025, at the Allianz Forum in Berlin, the Association of German Landscape Architects honoured the best entries in the 2025 German Landscape Architecture Prize competition.

bdla President Prof. Stephan Lenzen welcomed the approximately 500 guests who had accepted the professional association’s invitation to the evening’s event. “The competition for the German Landscape Architecture Prize, organised by the bdla for the 17th time this year, demonstrates once again,” said the President, “that the profession is distinguished by its high level of expertise in tackling complex spatial, cultural and ecological challenges.” Over the decades, the prize has become the most significant platform for raising public awareness of the profession.

In the 2025 competition, the wide range of open-space planning tasks and their precise implementation were particularly impressive. The consistently minimalist use of design elements – both in new developments and in regeneration projects – was also striking. Diversity played a central role in this, Prof. Lenzen emphasised. This encompassed the preservation of biodiversity, consideration of the diverse needs of users, and the design of gender-equitable, inclusive and accessible open spaces. With these characteristics, the latest competition – for which 140 entries were submitted – once again underlined its role as a guiding light for the sustainable, liveable and resilient design of our cities and landscapes.

In her video message, Federal Minister for Construction Verena Hubertz articulated the guiding principle: “Building the future means creating living spaces”. To ensure that we can continue to live together successfully in the future, cities must become resilient to the consequences of climate change. Heatwaves and heavy rainfall present new challenges – both an opportunity and a task to redesign people’s living environments, she emphasised. The aim must be to create liveable places: spaces that offer protection, invite people to linger, facilitate encounters and promote relaxation. “We need more trees, more water, more shade. Not merely as decoration, but as a central component of modern urban structures. Because a climate-resilient city does not begin at the city’s outskirts.” She paid tribute to the profession’s achievements, saying: “Landscape architects, horticultural and landscaping specialists, and all those who maintain and design our green spaces – through their daily work, they all make an invaluable contribution to the quality of life in our towns and communities.”

Awards and First Prize
During the ceremony that followed, awards were presented in nine competition categories – all of which reflect the fields of activity of landscape architects. The 2025 German Landscape Architecture Prize was awarded to the team at Franz Reschke Landschaftsarchitektur, Berlin, for the project ‘Höxter State Garden Show 2023’. The award ceremony took place in the presence of Höxter’s mayor, Daniel Hartmann, and the councillor for planning, Julia Gogrewe. The organisers thus recognised a design in which, as the jury noted, “an individual, natural and unpretentious solution was developed for each site, which responds precisely to the expected levels of use whilst at the same time harmoniously enhancing historical and ecological qualities in terms of atmosphere, and is crafted with enduring value down to the last detail”. The result is a coherent city-wide framework of public spaces, which has ever since offered local residents added value in their daily lives.

From Perspective to Foresight
The keynote speech was delivered by Andreas Huber, a passionate advocate for sustainable development and sustainability. He had titled his talk ‘Wind of Change – How our attitude to change shapes the world of tomorrow’. Inspired by the idea of viewing change as an opportunity and helping to shape the future, the Managing Director of the German Society CLUB OF ROME e.V. took those present “on an emotional journey that not only stirs the soul but, above all, encourages us to move beyond outdated viewpoints and adopt new perspectives”.

At the end of the awards ceremony, bdla President Prof. Stephan Lenzen invited all landscape architects and their clients to ‘decorate’ the ‘Showcase of German Landscape Architecture’ once again in 2027 with their plans or completed projects. “We must do more to live up to our responsibility and the relevance of landscape architecture. The planning professions are called upon to take a pioneering role in the climate-just and climate-adapted creation and preservation of resilient habitats.”
