The Association of German Landscape Architects in Hesse (Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekt:innen Hessen e. V.) has announced the Hessian Landscape Architecture Prize for the first time, under the patronage of Boris Rhein, Minister-President of the State of Hesse.

The shortlisted projects have now been finalised. The online jury selected 18 projects between 3 and 27 March 2026.
By the closing date for entries on 27 February 2026, 30 landscape architecture practices had submitted a total of 39 projects for the 2026 Hessian Landscape Architecture Prize, all of which were built and completed in Hesse between 1 January 2020 and the announcement of the competition on 1 December 2025.

In light of climate change, urban densification, new ways of living and working, and rising demands regarding ecology, biodiversity and social quality, the design of open spaces and landscapes in Hesse’s regions, towns and local authorities plays a key role in managing the increasingly scarce resource that is ‘landscape’.

The aim of the competition is to highlight and raise awareness of the field of work and expertise of landscape architects as valuable and pioneering partners within professional circles and among the general public. It emphasises their responsibility for the environmental, social, ecological and sustainable quality of open spaces and their integration into urban planning. Furthermore, the competition aims to recognise architectural culture and design quality through interdisciplinary collaboration with other specialist disciplines. The competition promotes experimentation, strengthens the willingness to engage in new forms of local collaboration, and encourages the younger generation of planners to contribute their own ideas and innovations.

The competition recognises creatively designed open spaces and landscapes, as well as comparable projects in Hesse, which are based on a recognisably innovative and sustainable planning approach. The Hessian Landscape Architecture Prize is an honorary award.
