… we’re joining in!
The Hannover Insect Alliance was founded at the end of 2020 on the initiative of NABU Hannover, BUND, the Hannover Region, Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the Hannover Environment Centre, with the aim of promoting and advancing insect conservation in the city. In addition to the state capital, Hannover, the Alliance now comprises 25 partners, and we have been part of it since August 2025!
All members have committed to promoting and improving insect and species conservation on their land, in keeping with the motto ‘every square metre counts’. To this end, the wildflower mix ‘Blühende Gärten’ (Blooming Gardens) was developed. This ‘Hannover mix’ is specially tailored to the natural environment of Hannover and supports wild bees, butterflies and many other insect species. (The ‘Hanover mix’ seeds are available in small quantities of 8 grams at the Globetrotter branch in the Ernst-August-Galerie next to the main railway station and in the shop at Herrenhausen Palace.)
So how can the bdla Lower Saxony + Bremen contribute to the Insect Alliance?
- Acting as advocates within our own networks
- Raising greater awareness of insect diversity and conservation, e.g. as part of our own competitions or events
- Taking insect concerns into account in our day-to-day planning work!
- Promoting insect diversity in our own gardens or on our balconies!
As part of the ‘Intraregionale 2026’, a cycle tour through the historic cultural landscape of the ‘Calenberger Land’ on the outskirts of Hanover will take place on 12 June, in cooperation with the Hanover Insect Alliance, the Hanover Environmental Centre and Netzwerk Baukultur in Niedersachsen e. V. (Working Group on Sustainable Open Spaces and Landscapes, led by Paul Tontsch), a cycle tour through the historic cultural landscape of the ‘Calenberger Land’ on the outskirts of Hanover. Keynote talks at selected locations aim to raise awareness of insect conservation and garden and landscape culture. Details of the programme will follow.
