Where trees line the roads – tree-lined avenues caught between road safety, nature conservation and the preservation of historic gardens

Tree-lined avenues are one of the oldest and most defining elements of open-space design. As far back as ancient Egypt, they lined paths and roads. They structure and adorn gardens, parks, town squares and cemeteries. They offer shelter from the sun and rain and make the course of the road easy to follow over long distances.

Technical requirements (e.g. safety distances from roads) make it difficult to create new tree-lined avenues. This raises new questions: Is a tree-lined avenue (monoculture) even appropriate in this day and age? How can the demands of road safety, nature conservation and the preservation of historic gardens be reconciled? What might a tree-lined avenue of the future look like?

In the lecture series “How climate-friendly is landscape architecture?” organised by the BDLA, Leibniz University Hannover and the DGGL, we aim to get to the bottom of these questions with three speakers followed by a discussion.

Lecture 1: “Tree-lined avenues as landscape elements – significance for nature conservation and climate targets”, Prof. Dr Jürgen Peters (Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development)

Lecture 2: “Avenues in heritage conservation – theory and practice”, Torsten Volkmann (Brandenburg State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments and State Archaeological Museum)

Presentation 3: “Framework conditions for the Lower Saxony State Road Construction Authority regarding the upkeep and maintenance of tree-lined avenues”, Robert Möwisch (Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport)

Afterwards, we invite you to round off the evening with informal discussions and refreshments.

The event is free of charge; no registration is required.
