The lecture series “Landscape: A Space for the Future”, organised by the Association of German Landscape Architects (bdla), the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture (DGGL) and Leibniz University Hannover, will address the topic “Forest – More Than the Sum of Its Trees”.

Forests are far more than mere collections of individual trees. They shape landscapes and cities, promote health and wellbeing, and form highly complex networks that influence our lives in many different ways. The lecture event ‘Forest – More than the Sum of its Trees’ will examine the topic from various scientific and planning perspectives.

Ferdinand Ludwig will kick off the event with his talk ‘The City as a Habitable Forest? Architectural-botanical approaches to the fusion of trees and architecture’. He will highlight innovative approaches to combining living trees and architecture to create new forms of sustainable and climate-adapted urban development.
Anika Gaggermeier will then address the importance of the forest for human wellbeing in her talk ‘The Forest – A Place of Wellbeing. Recreation and Health in the Forest’. She explains the positive effects that spending time in the forest has on health, recreation and quality of life, and why nature-based spaces are becoming increasingly important for our society.
In his English-language lecture ‘Global Mapping of Fungal Networks’, Justin Stewart introduces the hidden world of fungal networks. He demonstrates how mycorrhizal fungi supply plants with water and nutrients, increase their resilience to climate stress and thus make a significant contribution to the stability of forests and urban green spaces. His research into the global mapping of these networks highlights the vital importance of healthy soils for the future of our ecosystems.
The event thus offers a fascinating insight into the forest as a habitat, a factor in health, a field of research and a source of inspiration for shaping our future.
