The tenth competition of the nrw.landscapearchitecture.award breaks new ground: in addition to classic object planning, in 2022 conceptual, green design, landscape planning, urban planning, climate-impacting projects will also be evaluated. The submission deadline has been extended. The new deadline is 25 February 2022. Since 2004, bdla nw has been awarding the North Rhine-Westphalian Landscape Architecture Prize, which has now become an institution.

Offices in the bdla that have worked on such tasks in North Rhine-Westphalia are expressly invited to submit an entry. However, through skilful preparation of the project and elaboration of the unique selling points, it must still be possible to present the idea in a comprehensible way on a sheet of paper in DIN A1 format and a short text. The bdla nw is thus following a suggestion by Prof. Gerd Aufmkolk, twice chairman of the jury; landscape architecture today is more than classic object planning, we perceive ourselves - see "Green Infrastructure" - in a key position between urban planning, transport planning, civil engineering, building construction and new land use through agribusiness and extraction of mineral resources, but public perception is completely lacking. The 2022 prize is intended to give new impetus to this. Thanks to the cooperation with Baukultur Nordrhein-Westfalen e.V., we can once again present our activities to the outside world in the form of an exhibition and print product. In this respect, participation in the process alone is a benefit for every office and a good opportunity for our own public relations work!

Prizes 2020

Landscape architect Volker Püschel from Mettmann was awarded a prize for the design of a house garden in Düsseldorf. The jury praised the planning and implementation of this ruin garden with "high aesthetic quality in materiality, detail and use of plants".

With the design of Fritz-Kühn-Platz in Iserlohn, the office of scape Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH provides an exemplary solution to the almost prototypical problem of designing a "green centre"," was the jury's verdict on the award for the landscape architects from Düsseldorf.
The third award went to the planning office DTP Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH from Essen, which designed the Westerholt recreational area in Herten: "With a high-quality and appealing design concept with unconventional details, barriers are torn down here and spaces and offers are created for the most diverse user and age groups," is how the jury explained its decision.

In addition, the jury awarded a commendation to the Duisburg office of Danielzik Leuchter + Partner Landschaftsarchitekten for their tree planting project in Bochum. The project demonstrates the importance of landscape architecture for climate protection and living conditions in the city: "Overall, the concept presented is an impressive look into the 'technology' of tomorrow's modern 'sponge' city."
The second recognition went to Landschaftsarchitektur + Holzapfel-Herziger & Benesch PartG mbB from Hamburg for the redesign of the market square in Bünde. "The design impresses with a high (urban) spatial quality; with the carefully placed rows of trees and avenues, an open, multifunctional square space fits into the urban layout. The materials are carefully chosen, robust and sustainable, and the quality of the implementation is high.

Prizes 2016
The jury awarded one prize each to the projects Stadtumbau Innere Hustadt (here Hufelandplatz and connecting axis in the neighbourhood), Bochum, by Danielzik und Leuchter Landschaftsarchitekten, Duisburg, and Grüne Mitte Essen by Scape Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH, Düsseldorf, because landscape architecture has given entire neighbourhoods a completely new quality. Both offices were dealing with problem districts: In Bochum with a typical large housing estate of the 1970s, in Essen with a brownfield site on the edge of the city centre. While in Bochum's large housing estate Innere Hustadt it was above all the citizen participation that was emphasised and the creation of identity-forming spaces in the existing buildings that stood out, in Essen other aspects led to a prize. In the quarter, which is partly newly built from scratch, the convincing design language with which water was incorporated into the urban space in a forward-looking way and the creation of a high-quality green connection in a heterogeneous environment were particularly worthy of an award.

Awards 2016

The offices of RMP Stephan Lenzen Landschaftsarchitekten from Bonn and Geskes + Hack from Berlin were each awarded a commendation for their designs for the city of Zülpich. The plans for the Park am Wallgraben and the Seepark were developed within the framework of the 2014 State Garden Show. With these awards, the jury on the one hand praised the new impulses for urban development through excellent planning, and on the other hand referred to the urban planning effectiveness of garden shows.
