The Central German Student Competition has been supporting the next generation of landscape architects for many years and offers students the opportunity to engage with current planning challenges in a professional competition. The 2025/26 competition was organised by the bdla Saxony. Held every two years, the competition is aimed at landscape architecture students in Central Germany and rotates between the federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
Students of landscape architecture at Dresden University of Technology, Erfurt University of Applied Sciences and Anhalt University of Applied Sciences were invited to take part.
The competition focused on the town centre of Zwickau under the theme ‘CONNECTING SCAPES AND BEAT THE HEAT’.
The students were asked to develop innovative landscape architecture concepts for the dual-aspect city centre. The focus was on connecting open spaces, the creative management of rainwater, and strategies for adapting to increasing heat stress in urban areas. In this context, ideas were also sought for revitalising the city centre and creating open spaces for social interaction.
Following the submission of all 28 competition entries, the judging panel met on 11 May and selected the winners.
We congratulate the winners of the
1st Prize: Kurgut Polina, Ignatenko Anastasiia, Fathima Anz; Anhalt University of Applied Sciences
2nd Prize: 2018 Bley Luis, Feibicke Victoria; Erfurt
University of Applied Sciences 3rd Prize: 2027 Dorendorf Chris, Ahlburg Pauline, Horn Lea Fabienne; Anhalt University of Applied Sciences
The judging panel commended the submitted entries for their creative, multi-layered approaches and high technical quality. In particular, the students’ award-winning designs demonstrate a sensitive, fresh perspective on the city centre and a thorough planning-based examination of the city in the context of climate change, without neglecting social aspects. The results of the competition exemplify how landscape architecture can make an effective contribution to climate-resilient and socially inclusive urban development.
