A resounding success – bdla continuing professional development bus tour: ‘Campus – Insights into the outdoor facilities of educational institutions’

This year, on 22 August, the bus tour took us to educational facilities for teenagers and young adults – all centred on the theme of educational campuses. The examples ranged from measures to reclaim land within existing developments to the complete construction of two new school campuses.

The tour took us to the following schools:

 

1. School campus instead of a tram depot – Dresden Tolkewitz
: conversion of an old tram depot into a dual-school site; Guided tour by Pia Hauptvogel – UKL Architects – and Ms Dittmer from STESAD GmbH, the client. Challenges: difficult ground conditions, delays to the construction schedule. Distinctive feature: design elements referencing the historic tram depot

 2. Historic Botanical Garden – HTW Dresden Campus, Pillnitz
Professor Henning Günther from the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture leads a tour of the open-air and teaching grounds – providing first-hand information.A variety of green garden spaces and courtyards, some of which were originally laid out historically, whilst others have been refurbished as part of new builds and extensions over the past few decades. Special feature: rainwater is fully infiltrated on-site via troughs; a learning opportunity right on the doorstep: an experimental infiltration facility using different substrates
Time for a
break: a picnic in Dresden Pillnitz and a professional discussion in a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by greenery

 3. Pieschen School Campus opens up to the outside
world: From industrial wasteland to a dual-school site – site development from the client’s perspective; project presentation by STESAD GmbH, Ms Dittmer, who faced similar requirements and challenges at a former brownfield site as the project in Tolkewitz
. A special feature: a climbable sculpture as an inviting ‘statement’ and, adjacent to it, a diverse green corridor through the neighbourhood, featuring garden islands, table tennis tables and play areas that are also popular with pupils.
4. Dresden International School (DIS)
Campus: Refurbishment of existing buildings
facing the challenges of an inner-city location:
out with the tarmac, in with the trees!
Guided tour by Blaurock Landscape Architecture and the school: The new green space in the centre of the school playground not only provides coolness, shade and evaporation, but also a sense of belonging: trees from a distant homeland invite pupils to feel at home here in Dresden.Special feature: Experimental element: loosened existing substrate consisting of rubble and fill soil, without much tree substrate
