Climate, landscape and energy: three buzzwords that have to be thought of together. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, increased energy consumption due to industrialization caused significant changes in the landscape. The impact on the climate caused by coal combustion was also recognized. While global warming was even seen as positive for agricultural production at the beginning of these research discussions, this view changed as our knowledge of the climate increased.

Today we know more: we all experience the effects and interrelationships of climate, landscape and energy in our everyday lives. We experience with heat waves or other climate events, the expansion of renewable energies and their effects on the landscape a change, which we must meet. At the same time, there are also opportunities that we should seize. After a historic flash flood in July 2023, the Upper Franconian town of Selbitz recognized the opportunity to shape the future out of the crisis. Municipal landscape planning with a focus on sponge flooding plays a decisive role as an adaptation strategy to the challenges of climate change. The conference will highlight different perspectives, discuss points of view and present case studies.
