Objective
The aim of this seminar is to present current woody plant assortments and high-maintenance perennial areas for the residential environment and to show the state of research in the field of functional planting (including privacy protection, local climate and air exchange, planting of rainwater infiltration areas).

Content
The requirements for urban greenery are becoming increasingly complex. In addition to structuring spaces and providing privacy, the importance of the ecosystem services provided by shrubs and perennials is playing an increasingly important role in the age of climate change. In view of increasing summer heat loads and new plant diseases and pests, the ideal urban greenery is expected to have a high level of fine dust binding, cooling effects, dense tree volumes with good urban ventilation and high pest resistance. Perennials must be able to tolerate very damp or very dry locations, be insect-friendly and easy to care for and contribute to biodiversity.

In so-called shrinking cities, landscaped areas are becoming ever more extensive with increasingly decreasing maintenance budgets. In growing cities with a strong tendency towards densification, the squeezed green spaces must provide compensation and accommodate significantly more uses.
