Over the past few months, the organisers of ‘Baumentscheid München’ have worked tirelessly to bring more trees to Munich and thus provide greater protection against the heat.
And with success! The required number of signatures has now been significantly exceeded. These will be submitted to the District Administration Office shortly.
The next step will then be either the direct adoption of the citizens’ petition, a referendum, or a negotiated solution with the City Council.
The initiative was founded in spring 2025 by two students at the Technical University of Munich: Joseph Coenen (25, BSc in Landscape Architecture, MSc candidate in Urban Planning, CSU) and Stefanie Günther (25, BSc in Psychology, MSc candidate M.Sc. in Politics & Technology, Greens).
Together with 150 volunteers and 50 partner organisations, the pair have been working over the past few months to make Munich greener and better equipped to cope with heatwaves.
