BaumEntscheid München is a not-for-profit initiative that aims to make Munich heat-resilient by 2040 – to protect the health, the economy and the social inclusion of all Munich residents. This aim is to be achieved through a referendum at the end of 2026.

Following the successful ‘Baum in Berlin’ referendum, ‘BaumEntscheid München’ was therefore established as the first local branch of the umbrella organisation BaumEntscheid e.V.

The project is supported by over 100 committed Munich residents from civil society, academia and the business sector (project leaders: Joseph Coenen and Stefanie Günther) and is an independent initiative within BaumEntscheid e.V., funded exclusively through donations.

Why Munich?

Like many cities, the Bavarian capital has a heat problem. Due to climate change, streets, squares and residential areas are becoming increasingly hot. There are still gaps in heat protection – and this is precisely where BaumEntscheid comes in. After all, heat stress is expected to become even more severe in the coming years.

According to a satellite analysis by the Berliner Morgenpost, Munich ranks 74th out of 79 major German cities in terms of the proportion of green urban space – placing it near the bottom of the national rankings.

Key objectives of the initiative are:

A network of street trees
:
30 per cent canopy cover on all local roads – with climate-resilient trees that are maintained on a long-term basis.

Prioritising
heat-prone neighbourhoods
: We will plant trees first in areas where it is particularly hot, where there is a lack of shade, or where many older people and families with children live.

Securing
tree sites:
Quickly identifying suitable sites for new trees – without encroaching on cycle paths or footpaths. Infrastructure projects will now make trees a fixed part of their planning.

The bdla Bavaria welcomes these objectives and supports the initiative as a partner.

If you’d also like to support the project with your signature, you can do so at one of the many collection points across the city – or from the comfort of your own home.
