The Bachelor's thesis by Florian Eisenlohr and Tim Harz entitled "Gleispark Frankfurt. Freiraumplanerisches Entwicklungskonzept für den Hauptgüterbahnhof" was awarded at the graduation ceremony of the winter semester 2017/2018 on 16 February 2018 at Geisenheim University.

Using the remaining part of the former railway site in Frankfurt am Main as an example, the work deals with the planning challenge of converting urban infrastructure wastelands.

Tim Harz and Florian Eisenlohr found their design site during their wanderings through Frankfurt. They were fascinated by its rough charm - a contrast to the neighbouring, slick Europaviertel. As a compensatory measure for the construction of this new district, a refuge for wall lizards was created on the railway wasteland and the area surrounded by a fence. Human use is undesirable here.

Instead of a fenced-off area in the middle of the city, the young planners propose a park. Skilful zoning will allow intensive sports and recreational use. At the same time, the area can remain the refuge for lizards and many other animal and plant species that it is today. Last but not least, the memory of the past is to be kept alive. To this end, relics of freight traffic such as rails and wagons have been sensitively integrated into the new design.

Florian Eisenlohr and Tim Harz are not only gifted draughtsmen, but also talented photographers. The thesis, however, is characterized above all by a high degree of independence, by courage in dealing with the site and its contradictions, eloquence in linguistic expression, a contemporary language of form and an outstanding presentation.

The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Constanze A. Petrow and Prof. Franziska Schieferdecker from the Institute for Open Space Development.

The study prize for landscape architecture is endowed with 500 euros and is awarded twice a year, for the first time in the summer semester 2017,was this year in the winter semester 2017/2018 for the second time in cooperation of the Hessian state associations of

Conference "Sport, play and exercise in urban areas", 10/11.10.2024, DOSB, Frankfurt/Main

In addition to traditional sports in clubs, informal sports are becoming increasingly attractive in a fitness and health-conscious society. They are an important attraction and part of the green infrastructure, which has a social and intergenerational connecting function in urban areas.

The functionality of sports and leisure facilities integrated into the urban space enriches the quality of life across all social classes and age groups and increases the potential of inner-city green spaces. They combine the sporting aspect with the urban lifestyle and enable this to be enjoyed in a variety of ways.
The need to embed sports facilities in the urban landscape is a challenge and places new demands on urban planning, landscape architecture and developers.
