With her design: ‘Energy in Transition – Fire as Origin and Vision’, Hanna Kaiser from the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences won the Bdla Young Architects’ Competition in May 2025 for the LAGA Bad Nenndorf 2026, themed ‘Traces of the Past – Sources of the Future’.
Second prize was awarded to the group project ‘Speicherplatz’ by Ms Antonia Brinkmann and Daphne te Haar from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Third prize was awarded to the group project ‘Perennial Gardens in Times of Drought Stress’ by Annika Marie Gille, Pauline-Charlotte Günther and Laurens Oehler from Leibniz University Hannover, whilst an honourable mention was awarded to the entry “Sonnengruß” by Clara Kaiser and Maxi-Mia Kamphus from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences.
In her design ‘Energy in Transition – Fire as Origin and Vision’, Hanna Kaiser used fire as her motif. Fire that not only destroys, but also symbolises the beginning of something new. Dark gravel, charred deadwood and organically shaped planting islands create a landscape characterised by pockets of fire. The selection of plants, featuring perennials with red, yellow and orange flowers, further explores the theme of fire. Shrubs with silvery foliage symbolise the ash drifting through the air.
The garden was realised by the firm Kretschmer, Garten- Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau from Langenhagen on the meadow terraces near the main entrance to the LAGA. The meadow terraces form part of the newly laid-out Meadow Park, which adjoins the Spa and Landscape Park to the east.
The Berlin-based firm hutterreimann Landschaftsarchitektur GmbH took on the detailed design for the garden as part of a scheme to promote young talent. Hanna Kaiser’s student project was supervised by Prof. Ute Aufmkolk and Prof. Cassian Schmidt.
The award ceremony will take place on 2 June 2026 at the State Garden Show grounds. Further information to follow.
