With informative presentations and stimulating discussions, the project ‘Landscape Planning in Bavaria – Local and Innovative’ drew to a close on 7 October 2025 at the Nuremberg Press Club during the second Bavarian Landscape Summit, in a relaxed atmosphere. The project’s closing event, after five years, also marked the start of more innovative and sustainable landscape plans across Bavaria.

In recent years, landscape planning has been successfully promoted with the help of partner local authorities and specialist planners. The solutions developed and the insights gained have since been compiled into various digital and printed publications. For example, the lessons learnt and the approach taken by landscape planners in developing specialist modules on current key issues such as climate adaptation and flood protection have been summarised in final reports. A guide on how public participation contributes to a successful landscape planning process has also been produced.

More about ‘Landscape Planning in Bavaria – Local and Innovative’

From 2021 to 2025, the project ‘Landscape Planning in Bavaria – Local and Innovative’ worked with committed towns and municipalities to develop innovative building blocks for contemporary local landscape planning. The project focused on challenges affecting many local authorities in Bavaria: the energy transition, climate adaptation, raw material extraction, pressure on land, and the connectivity of habitats. For each key issue, a tailored solution concept was developed in conjunction with the landscape plans of selected partner local authorities. At the same time, the partner municipalities were trained to involve local stakeholders and the public in the development of their landscape plans at an early stage and in a participatory manner.

The project was implemented on behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection (StMUV) from 2021 to 2025 by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) and the Bavarian Academy for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management (ANL). The Bavarian Association of Towns and Cities, the Bavarian Association of Municipalities and bdla Bavaria provided significant support for the project.
